The Stories for Change event is one which benefits the boys at Khaylethu, a Youth For Christ shelter for street-children, who are in the process of being reintegrated with their families.
These boys love reading and have recently been given journals they have asked for. They are creative and have, like anyone else, stories to tell: happy stories, sad stories, funny stories. And the boys want to tell them. Golden Key Pietermaritzburg will assist with the process of recording the stories which will be published into a single book. The boys will also host a book launch in which they share their stories in a performance for guests that they choose to invite.
To raise funds for the publishing, we’re doing something different for a change: The Stories for Change – Open Mic Night. On the 17th of May at 6:30pm (the day before lectures end and we say goodbye to the first semester. We’re transforming the Hexagon Coffee Bar into a performance space complete with intimate lighting and the finest performers in the city and beyond (I am not going to reveal our confirmed performers just yet but all shall be revealed in due course). Tickets are R40 and besides the soul-baring performances, some great gifts are up for grabs. The Hexagon staff has also been kind enough to throw in a juicy chicken or beef burger as well as a bottled drink for every guest. For those thirstier than others, the bar will be open all night and throughout performances.
The Centre for the Visual Arts also has a few tricks up its sleeve. Think collaborations, think speaking art, think insanity.
But hold up, it wouldn’t be much of an open mic if the mic wasn’t opened up to you, so here’s your chance: Live auditions will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of May at our Stories for a Change stations from 11:30 until 2pm on:
- Wednesday: Library Lawns
- Thursday: Hexagon (New Arts Lawn)
What do you need to prepare? Well, come and tell your story, a story, whatever story you want to tell. Tell it through poetry, monologue, song, physical expression, rap, art, instrument, stand-up, whatever…
If you’re too shy to audition in front of everyone, we’re having private auditions on Tuesday, the 8th of May. You can sign up for auditions and get your tickets at our stations. We can only seat 100 guests, so make sure you act quickly to avoid disappointment. The mic will once again be opened towards the end of the evening.
More details will be put up all over campus!
Stay tuned and, for a change – make a story!
